You held the shares. The company declared a dividend. The payment date passed. And yet, nothing landed in your account.

This is one of the most common complaints among Nigerian retail investors, and it has a solution. Understanding why dividends go missing, and who is responsible for getting them to you, puts you back in control.

The Short Answer: Your Registrar

Every company listed on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) appoints a registrar, a licensed firm that manages its shareholder records and processes dividend payments. When a company approves a dividend, it hands the total payout to the registrar. The registrar then distributes funds to individual shareholders based on who held shares as of the qualification date.

If your dividend did not arrive, the problem almost certainly sits at one of three points: your e-Dividend mandate, your CSCS account linkage, or the registrar’s records.

Start an investment account on Bamboo and access NGX stocks with a properly linked CSCS account from day one.

The Most Common Reasons Dividends Go Missing

No e-Dividend mandate on file. Nigeria’s dividend system defaults to mailing a physical warrant (a cheque) to your registered address when no bank account is linked. If you have moved, never updated your address, or never submitted a mandate, that warrant is probably sitting uncashed somewhere. Uncashed warrants expire, typically within six months, and the amount becomes classified as unclaimed dividends.

Outdated bank details. If you submitted an e-Dividend mandate years ago and have since changed banks or closed that account, payments will fail. The registrar has no way of knowing your account changed unless you tell them.

Name mismatch. Your name on the share register must match your bank account name exactly. Even a small discrepancy, a middle name missing, a maiden name versus a married name, will cause a payment to fail.

Stale CSCS records. Your CSCS (Central Securities Clearing System) account is the foundation of your NGX shareholding. If your CHN (Clearing House Number) is not correctly linked to your current stockbroker account, your ownership records may not reconcile properly at the point of payment.

Wrong qualification date. Some investors buy shares after the qualification date, sometimes called the closure date or record date. If you bought in after that date, you were not on the register when the snapshot was taken and are simply not entitled to that particular dividend.

How to Recover a Missing Dividend

Step one: Confirm you were entitled. Check that you held the shares before the qualification date. Your broker or the Bamboo app will show your transaction history and dates.

Step two: Identify the registrar. Every listed company has a designated registrar. The directory below lists the registrars operating on the NGX and the currently active companies each one administers. Find the company whose dividend is missing, then locate its registrar.

Step three: Contact the registrar directly. Bring your CHN, your BVN, a copy of your valid ID, and your bank account details. Request a re-validation of your e-Dividend mandate or a re-issue of a lapsed warrant.

Step four: Submit or update your e-Dividend mandate. If you have never registered for e-Dividend, do it now. The SEC’s e-Dividend mandate form is processed through your registrar. This is the single most effective step any NGX investor can take to prevent future missed payments.

Download Bamboo and set up your account with a properly linked CSCS profile from the start.

A Note on Unclaimed Dividends

Nigeria’s unclaimed dividends problem runs into hundreds of billions of naira. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the NGX have actively pushed for full e-Dividend adoption to address this. If you suspect you have unclaimed dividends from any NGX-listed company, including companies that have since been delisted, contact the relevant registrar with your CHN and valid ID. There is no expiry on your right to claim dividends that were declared while you were a registered shareholder, even if the company is no longer listed.

If you are setting up a fresh investment account and want your dividend infrastructure sorted properly from the start, download Bamboo and our onboarding process walks you through CSCS linkage and e-Dividend registration.

Summary

Missing dividends are almost always recoverable. The key steps are: identify the correct registrar for the company in question, contact them directly with your KYC documents and bank details, and register or update your e-Dividend mandate. Future payments will then credit directly to your bank account without any further chasing.

Owning shares is the easy part. Making sure every kobo of your dividend reaches you is what separates an organised investor from one who leaves money on the table.
